Efficacy and Safety of Pefloxacin in the Treatment of Patients with Severe Infections

Abstract
In order to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pefloxacin- a new quinolone derivative- in the treatm;nt of patients with severe systemic infections, 34 patients, 10 with pneumonia, 15 with acute pyelonephri ¢¥s and 9 with acute pelvic inflammatory disease were treated with pefloxacin 400mg bid intravenously. Fi e patients were excluded in this study because of unsatisfactory microbiological results.
The results were as follows;
1. Clinical cure was achieved in 27 patients (93.1%) and 2 patients (6.9%) were improved clinicall . 2. The initial pathogens were eradicated in all but one patient of septic abortion.
3. The hematologic and biochemical laboratory data for the evaluation of the toxicity of pefloxacin were all within normal limit.
4. As the side-effects of pefloxacin, gastrointestinal and neurological natures were observed in one patient (3.4%) respectively. But above symptoms were mild and completely subsided without a y treatment.
It can be considered that pefloxacin is a safe and effective antibiotics that can be used in the treatment of severe systemic infections.
